Short CV

Mara G. Freire graduated in Chemistry – Analytical Chemistry in 2003 by University of Aveiro, Portugal, and received the “Best Chemistry Student Award” from Dow Portugal. By the end of 2007 she completed her PhD in Chemical Engineering by University of Aveiro, having during her PhD studies trainees at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Claude Bernard University, Lyon, France. From 2008 to the middle of 2013 she was a post-doctoral researcher at Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica, ITQB2, New University of Lisbon, Portugal. In 2012, Freire was an invited professor at Tiradentes University, Sergipe, Brazil. From June 2013 – January 2014, Freire was an Assistant Researcher, and since February 2014 she is a Coordinator Researcher at CICECO (Aveiro Institute of Materials), Chemistry Department, University of Aveiro, Portugal.

Since 2005, Freire published more than 140 papers in international peer reviewed journals, three book chapters and edited one book, and has over 5000 citations and an h-index of 41. The scientific network of Freire is supported by publications with more than 150 distinct authors with the most diverse affiliations. In addition to 6 best poster awards in international conferences, Freire was the advisor of the winner MSc thesis in the Industrial and Technology Category in the Future Ideas Thesis Competition (2014), and received the ECTP-NETZSCH Young Scientist Award in 2014.

Freire participated as a team member in 10 research projects and was the principal investigator in a FCT funded project from January 2012 to December 2013. Currently, Freire is the principal investigator of a Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) started on February 1st 2014. Mara Freire completed the supervision of 22 MSc and 3 PhD theses and is at present supervising 11 PhD and 8 MSc theses, and 7 post-doctoral researchers.

Scientific Interests

From 2004-2007, Freire has been dedicated to the study of perfluorocarbons to be used in blood substitute formulations or in biological reactors. In this field, Freire has addressed gas-liquid and liquid-liquid equilibrium measurements and the study of their emulsions stability.

In the past years, Freire has been working with a new class of ubiquitous compounds – ionic liquids. The scientific interest devoted to these fluids includes their thermophysical characterization, the understanding of their solubilities in aqueous salt solutions and their use as extractive solvents for value-added compounds. In particular, ionic-liquid-based aqueous biphasic systems have been investigated for the extraction, concentration and purification of alkaloids, antioxidants, endocrine disruptors, pharmaceuticals, among others. Besides their study as potential extractive platforms, the molecular-level mechanisms responsible for their two-phase formation have been deeply investigated.
