Research interests

José M. F. Ferreira is the leader of the Advanced Processing Group. His main research interests are connected with:
• The synthesis of powders by different techniques;
• Colloidal processing of materials with enhanced properties from well dispersed and high solids loaded suspensions as a way to obtain materials with controlled homogeneous microstructures, including: (i) structural (oxide- and non-oxide-based) ceramics; (ii) functional (piezoelectric, ferroelectric, magnetic, etc.) materials;
• Development of materials for optical and energy related applications;
• Development and processing of materials for applications in biomedicine, especially in dentistry, orthopedics and tissue engineering. The types of materials for applications in biomedicine include: (i) calcium phosphates (pure and doped with elements that make part of calcified tissues; (ii) calcium phosphate bone cements; (iii) the design, preparation, characterization and processing of bioactive glasses and glass ceramics; (iv) the preparation of composite materials based on bio polymeric matrices incorporating the above referred inorganic components.

Achievements

Significant breakthroughs were achieved in the fields of ceramic science and technology. Some of the most recent examples include the following areas:

1. Bioactive glasses: Development of fast healing, resorbable, bioactive glass compositions, which are easy to process by aqueous colloidal techniques (including rapid fabrication techniques such as robocasting from 60 vol.% solids loading suspensions), able to achieve full densification before the onset of crystallization, therefore meeting the most demanding criteria from all the relevant view points;

2. Calcium phosphate bone cements (CPC): Development of CPC that are injectable with half of the liquid to powder ratio used in the commercial CPC, while do not undergo any filter pressing effect (the typical solid/liquid segregation presented by the commercial CPC upon injection). Accordingly, the resulting mechanical properties of the hardened CPC make them appropriate for applications in vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty to replace the polymetylmetaacrylate ones, which are non-bioactive, non-resorbable, potentially toxic, highly exothermic upon curing (creating necrosis problems), incapable of establishing a bond with the living tissues, and stimulating the resorption/collapse of the neighbouring vertebrae by the stress shielding effect;

3. Aqueous processing of functional (piezoelectric, ferroelectric, magnetic, etc.) ceramics materials, including micrometric pillar arrays with features that enable doubling the actual resolution of the imagiology ultrasonic devices: Achievement of low viscous and high concentrated (up to 60 vol.%) suspensions with long term stability, absence of hydrolysis and, therefore, absence of degradation of the materials properties. High flexural strength (35 MPa) of the green pasts for outstanding the high shear rates they undergo upon unmoulding.


Research/academic activities

Along his scientific career, he has supervised 19 Master and 17 PhD students, registered 15 patents, published 6 book Chapters and more than 390 articles in SCI journals, including 2 Feature Articles. He also published 25 articles in referred journals and 92 papers in conference proceedings. He has delivered more than 60 Invited Lectures, including Key Note and Plenary Lectures, in international conferences.
