Perfil biográfico

Licenciatura em Engenharia Química , I.S.T., (1971). Doutoramento, U.M.I.S.T., Manchester, Reino Unido, (J.L. Dawson, 1981). Agregação, I.S.T. (1993).

Mário Ferreira efectuou o pós-doutoramento, na UMIST, e na Universidade Hokkaido, Sapporo, Japão. A sua actividade científica desenvolve-se no domínio da engenharia de superfícies e interfaces, sendo um dos seus principais intereses o desenvolvimento de materiais avançados. Entre estes contam-se os materiais com superfície modificada pela aplicação de revesti mentos e pela alteração da estrutura e/ou composição de superfície. Nos seus estudos incluem-se materiais tratados por laser e implantação iónica. O estudo de revestimentos, como tintas e anodizados, e de materiais mais tradicionais, como betões armados são também objectivo das suas preocupações dada a importância social e económica destes produtos. A substituição de formulações e tecnologias poluentes que se encontram muitas veses associadas aos revestimentos, por outras "limpas" tem sido, também, associada aos seus estudos. O desenvolvimento de técnicas de avaliação e monitorização dos processos químicos/electroquímicos de degradação de materiais por efeito ambiental, bem como a modelização dos processos envolvidos completam os seus interesses científicos actuais.
