José Carlos Almeida (born 1964) is a researcher at CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials, Department of Materials and Ceramic Engineering, University of Aveiro, Portugal. José Carlos is José Carlos is now President of the Portuguese Ceramic and Glass Society, and was its Secretary from 2014 to 2020. He is also member of the Permanent Executive Committee of the European Ceramic Society since 2017. He is now working in the FCT Project MULBIOIMPLANT - development of a multifunctional and bio-inspired implant to improve bone integration. He was CEO and owner of two companies between 1990 and 2010, having gained experience in various management areas. In 2008 José Carlos did a MSC in Science and Materials Engineering. at University of Aveiro. In 2011 he started a Doctoral Program in the same scientific area after receiving a grant from the FCT (Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation), having finished in January 2016. For him, it was a return to scientific research, interrupted in 1990 due to family reasons. That year he was attending a PhD in the field of materials science in a Brite/Euram Program project on silicon carbide reinforced silicon nitride composites. After obtaining the doctoral degree, the research work began as fellow postdoc in the project - Co-operation nº 3485 - DecorGlass - Decoration Techniques for the Glass, a Research & Development project promoted by Vista Alegre Atlantis (VAA) and the University Aveiro (UA), whose general objective is to develop a new range of glass products with high added value through study / development of new techniques and decoration materials. In this project it has been possible to apply satisfactorily the knowledge acquired about sol-gel processing and hybrid materials in a technological and industrial context. At the same time, it was possible to initiate a participation as researcher in the project "Hybrid organic-inorganic borosilicate materials by sol-gel for bone tissue engineering" that stems from an Integrated Action Portugal-Germany. A group of the CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials, University of Aveiro, and the group of Professor Aldo Boccaccini of the Institute for Biomaterials, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. A partnership was started with a PhD student of the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering and Design, Universitat Jaume I., Castellon, Spain, working in the Biotechnology, Organometallic Chemistry and Materials Chemistry Group. The student developed potential bioactive hybrid coatings for titanium and steel dental implants. From 2017 to now, he co-supervised six MsC students of the Department of Materials and Ceramic Engineering, University of Aveiro. He is author of 12 scientific papers, some of them in collaboration with other Portuguese and foreigner research groups. He has collaborated as a reviewer with the following scientific journals: Materials Letters, Materials Science and Engineering C, Cerâmica, Materials, Ceramics International, Materials Chemistry and Physics, and Journal of Inorganic and Organometallic Polymers and Materials.
