André Miguel da Costa Lopes received both B.Sc. (2010) and M.Sc. (2012) degrees in Biotechnology from the University of Aveiro, Portugal. Since December 2017, he holds a PhD degree in Sustainable Chemistry from New University of Lisbon. His PhD thesis covered the application of ionic liquids in the valorization of agriculture and industrial wastes. In 2018 he had returned to University of Aveiro as postdoctoral researcher associated to CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials and was involved in the BBI project PROVIDES - PROcesses for Value added fibres by Innovative Deep Eutectic Solvents. In 2020, he got a researcher position at CECOLAB-Collaborative Laboratory Towards Circular Economy in collaboration with CICECO. His current research is focused on the development of green and sustainable technologies for the valorization of lignocellulosic biomass and technical lignin using alternative solvents (e.g. ionic liquids, deep eutectic solvents, supercritical CO2, among others) towards the integration in biorefineries.

He is co-author of 26 peer-review papers published in leading international journals and his work has been highly cited (>1280) with h-index = 13 (Scopus database). He is also the co-author of 3 book chapters, 2 conference proceedings and he is an inventor of 3 Portuguese patents (PT106743-B, PT106947-B and 108402-B). Currently, he is PI of a bilateral project in collaboration with CNRS institute at University of Poitiers in the frame of the Program Hubert Curien (PHC) for 2019/2020 aiming at biosurfactants and bioplasticizers production assisted by green solvents. He is a research member of the project BIOVINO (INTERREG V-A Spain/Portugal) aiming at the valorization of vineyard residues. He has been participating in several COST Actions related to biomass fractionation and valorization and is now participating in COST Action CA17128 (LignoCOST) towards lignin research with green chemistry methods. He was the principal supervisor of 1 MSc thesis, and he has been supporting the supervision of other PhD, MSc and BSc students.
