Scientific Interests

I am fascinated by the unique properties of the lanthanide ions. At the beginning it was just a fantastic light game (luminescence), with emission in the whole visible spectrum, and in the infrared region too. But lanthanides are not simple emitters of light used in colour and light technologies. Their luminescence spectra are like fingerprints very useful as a structural probe. Between them they are like brothers (similar chemical properties) with very different personal character (physical properties, in particular luminescence and magnetic). Some like to play together (energy transfer) and they can  substitute their cousins (transition metals) to play with friends (biomolecules for instance) improving their power (antenna effect). Lanthanides are realy very friendly, they like to help to relax the neighbours (relaxivity effect on the water protons used for MRI). Indeed there are much more to discover on their fundamentals and possible applications. Definitely lanthanides will continue to play a relevant role on the technology of the future.
