Scientific Interests

TRANSMISSION/SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY (T/S EM) techniques applied to full characterization of nanostructured materials whose physico-chemical properties contribute to an effective technological advance; correlation studies of final chemical properties, structural and morphological of nanomaterials; studies of structural dynamics of nanomaterials at real time; effective implementation of top-down techniques and bottom-up development of assembled nanomaterials; development, improvement and extension of new research methods for nanostructured materials.

A.V. Girão graduated in Chemistry by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, Portugal (FCUL, 2001), including the Curricular Project Solvent Extraction of Indium from Aqueous Solutions, by Phosphorous Esters, related with industrial hydrometallurgy and recovery of precious and semi-precious metals, awarded with the Portuguese Educational Development Programme Merit Scholarship (ProDEP 2001).

Became member of the Scientific Project (SP) (POCTI/35300/FÍS/2000) Manganese Oxides with Mixed Valency with Perovskite Structure (FCUL, Feb. 2002-July 2003) and completed the 1st year MsC in Applied Analytical Chemistry (FCUL, 2003).

A.V. Girão started her PhD (Nov. 2003, EPSRC funding Grant Nº GR/S45874/01) in Civil Engineering Materials at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Leeds (U.K.), supervised by Professor I.G. Richardson, under the theme The Nanostructure and Degradation of C-S-H in Portland and Blended Cements, one of the main contributions to a major SP with Industry partners (Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, Castle Cement Ltd., Lafarge Laboratoire Central de Recherche, W.R. Grace) within an European EPSRC funded SP. A.V. Girão also acquired professional experience by teaching Applied Microscopy to Civil Engineering Materials (Demonstrating Labs CIVE1300).

A.V. Girão developed new materials for fuel cells at her former research group (FCUL, Sept. 2007) and became Director of the Research & Development Department at S.R.E. (Soluções Racionais Energia), Portugal.

In April 2008, started a brief Post-Doc Fellowship within the SP (PTDC/FIS/65233/2006) Ternary and quaternary nitride alloys for lattice matched heterostructures: Novel materials for high efficiency field effect transistors and optoelectronic devices, under the Supervision of Dr. S. Pereira and Professor T. Trindade at the Centre for Research in Ceramics & Composite Materials - University of Aveiro, Portugal (CICECO-UA). Since January 2010, A.V. Girão began another post-doc position FCT (funding under Grant Nº SFRH/BPD/66407/2009) under the theme Template-Assisted Clustering of Colloidal Metal Particles and Derived Nanoscale Phenomena, at CICECO-UA under the supervision of Professor T. Trindade and S. Pereira. New insights and important research lines emerged from her previous research that required further investigation, and A.V. Girão renewed her Post-Doc Schollarship under the theme Nanofabrication of New Platforms for Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering, under the supervision of Professor Tito Trindade.

Since 2012, A.V. Girão became a lecturer in a curricular module for 1st year PhD students: Laboratories of Transmission Electron Microscopy.

A.V. Girão is also author/reviewer/member ACS; member of IOM (UK); Portuguese Microscopy Society; and Portuguese Chemistry Society.
