Metabolomics study on rare childhood diseases wins “Crescemos Consigo” Prize

The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) team at CICECO – Institute of Materials of Aveiro, University of Aveiro, led by Ana M. Gil, contributed to a study distinguished with the Best Poster in Session Award at the 25th National Congress of Pediatrics, held October 23–25, 2025, at the Alfândega do Porto.

The awarded study, entitled Urinary Metabolomic Fingerprints in Mitochondrial Disease and Chronic Kidney Disease: Shared Dysfunction, Diverging Profiles, was first-authored by Margarida Paiva Coelho, pediatrician at the Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Santo António and PhD student in Medical Sciences at ICBAS-UP. The multidisciplinary team included physicians from the Centro Materno Infantil do Norte (Local Health Unit of Santo António) and researchers from the Department of Human Genetics at the Instituto Ricardo Jorge (Porto) and CICECO.

Recognition of this work at the largest national pediatrics event highlights the importance of translational research, bridging advanced biomedical investigation with clinical hospital practice.

This award further reinforces the role of metabolomic approaches in personalized medicine, particularly in the study of mitochondrial and renal diseases in pediatric patients.
