FAME in Aveiro Advance Europe’s Roadmap for Advanced Materials

The Universidade de Aveiro hosted the FAME and FAME-EcoSys workshops, bringing together leading figures from European institutions, national agencies, industry, and research organisations to accelerate Europe’s capacity to deploy and scale Advanced Materials. Over two days of intensive work, participants aligned on a shared priority: ensuring that advanced materials become a strategic pillar for Europe’s competitiveness, sustainability, and industrial resilience. This edition of the workshops held particular significance for the host institution: they formed part of the curated programme celebrating the 25 years of CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials

Discussions throughout the workshops highlighted the urgent need to strengthen production scale-up, reduce deployment bottlenecks, and consolidate cross-border funding pathways as Europe prepares for the forthcoming Advanced Materials Act (2026). Speakers also stressed the importance of coherent regulation, test-bed infrastructures, industry-academia collaboration, investment mobilization, and innovation-driven skills development.

The programme brought contributions from the University of Aveiro leadership, the Ministry of Science and Technology, ANI, DG Research & Innovation, DG RTD, international experts, and representatives from major industrial players including Volkswagen Group, BASF, Michelin, Acciona Construction, and Palbit. The workshops also advanced the agenda of the InnoMatSyn initiative, particularly its focus on an integrated European ecosystem capable of supporting materials innovation from discovery to deployment.

With panels dedicated to regulatory frameworks, public and private investments, scale-up challenges, and workforce development, the event reinforced the strategic momentum behind Europe’s advanced materials agenda. As the workshops conclude, participants now move into targeted workstreams shaping regional and national actions, strengthening the European AdMa ecosystem, and supporting the coordinated rollout of future policy instruments.

By integrating the FAME and FAME-EcoSys workshops into its anniversary celebrations, CICECO highlights both its legacy and its future—connecting scientific excellence with strategic European initiatives aimed at transforming materials innovation into high-impact solutions for industry, society, and the green transition. “As CICECO celebrates 25 years, these workshops remind us that advancing materials science is not only about innovation—it’s about building ecosystems capable of shaping Europe’s next industrial chapter,” adds Paula Vilarinho, vice-director of CICECO.
