Paula Vilarinho, Vice-President of CICECO, has been elected President of the Federation of European Materials Societies (FEMS) for the 2026–2027 term.
FEMS brings together national materials societies from more than twenty European countries, promoting scientific cooperation, knowledge exchange, and engagement with industry and policy makers. The Federation is also widely recognised for organising the EUROMAT conference series, one of Europe’s major international meetings in Materials Science and Engineering.
At CICECO, Paula Vilarinho leads the Electroceramics Group and is actively involved in doctoral training and international research programmes. Her scientific work focuses on functional materials for electronics and microelectronics, particularly electrical polarisation phenomena from the macro-to the nanoscale and their application in advanced devices.
“As President, I look forward to working with our members and partners to advance research, innovation, and policy, bridging academia, industry, and society”, emphasised Vilarinho. “Thank you to the FEMS community for your trust and support. I’m looking forward to connecting with many of you as we embark on this journey”, she added.
Over her career, she has authored more than 280 scientific papers, several book chapters, and patent applications, and has coordinated or participated in numerous national and European research projects. Her election to the FEMS Presidency strengthens CICECO’s international profile and reinforces its role within European materials research networks.
During her mandate, she will work with the FEMS Board and member societies to advance research, innovation, and collaboration across academia, industry, and society, further consolidating Europe’s materials science ecosystem.
