The 14th International Workshop ‘’Application of Electrochemical Techniques to Organic Coatings’’ (AETOC 2026) took place from 23 to 26 March 2026 in the Douro Valley region, Portugal CICECO was part of the organising team with Alexandre Bastos, João Tedim, Kiryl Yasakau and Mário G. S. Ferreira (SECOP group). The initiative brought together leading academic and industrial experts to advance the understanding and application of electrochemical techniques for improving coating performance and durability.
The event aimed to strengthen collaboration between academia and industry while addressing current challenges in corrosion protection, materials sustainability and long-term performance assessment of coating systems. “This was an opportunity to bring together people from different groups working on the development and characterization of organic coatings and on the mechanistic understanding of degradation processes via the application of advanced characterization techniques,” explains João Tedim one of the event organizers.
The programme covered a broad range of topics related to the development and application of electrochemical methods. These included the study of organic coatings, hybrid sol-gel and composite systems, and surface conversion layers designed to enhance adhesion and durability. Particular emphasis was placed on smart coatings, corrosion inhibitors, and environmentally sustainable materials.
Additional contributions focused on electrochemical sensors for monitoring coating degradation, the integration of multiple analytical techniques, and modelling approaches to predict service life. These aspects are increasingly relevant for the design of next-generation protective systems with improved efficiency and reduced environmental impact.
This biennial scientific series, established in 1999 and hosted across several European locations, continues to provide a structured environment for knowledge exchange and the development of international collaborations. The 2026 edition was held under the auspices of the European Federation of Corrosion (Working Party 14 – Coatings) and supported by Division 4 of the International Society of Electrochemistry.
Institutional support included sponsorship from CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials and University of Aveiro, reinforcing its role in promoting international scientific initiatives in materials science and corrosion protection besides BioLogic, ISE - International Society of Electrochemistry, EFC- European Federation of Corrosion, IVIUM Technologies and SPM - Sociedade Portuguesa de Materiais.
