Students, researchers and industry professionals gathered at the University of Aveiro for the RESINSURF Summer School, an international training initiative dedicated to sustainable industrial surface treatments. Organised by the Department of Materials and Ceramic Engineering (DEMaC) at the University of Aveiro within the European RESINSURF project, the programme combined lectures and laboratory sessions focused on emerging technologies for corrosion protection.
Held over five days, the Summer School explored key industrial surface treatment processes, including anodising, electrodeposition and electrophoretic coatings. Participants gained both theoretical and hands-on experience while discussing innovative approaches that can replace conventional technologies based on hexavalent chromium, a substance facing increasing regulatory restrictions due to its environmental and health impacts.
The scientific programme was coordinated by Professors Alexandre Bastos and João Tedim, bringing together experts from academia and industry to share the latest developments in sustainable electrochemical surface engineering. The initiative also provided a platform for knowledge exchange between early-career researchers, students and industrial stakeholders, reinforcing the role of advanced training in accelerating the transition towards greener manufacturing technologies.
Beyond technical training, the initiative created opportunities for discussion between researchers, students and industrial stakeholders, reinforcing the role of international cooperation in advancing innovation in corrosion protection and functional coatings.

The Summer School formed part of the European RESINSURF project (Towards more RESilient, sustainable, competitive, and intelligent electrochemical surface treatments), which seeks to develop and validate safer, more sustainable alternatives to hexavalent chromium-based surface treatments. The project combines the development of new technologies with digital monitoring systems, industrial validation and specialised training activities to facilitate their adoption by industry.
Implemented across Portugal, Spain and France, RESINSURF brings together research organisations and industrial partners to strengthen innovation and competitiveness in the surface treatment sector while supporting the transition towards more environmentally responsible manufacturing processes.
