Four CICECO doctoral researchers complete UA Global Leader 2026

Four CICECO doctoral researchers were among the 35 participants selected for the inaugural UA Global Leader 2026 programme, an advanced leadership initiative promoted by the Doctoral School of the University of Aveiro (EDUA) to prepare the next generation of research leaders. Joana Pronto, Abel Alves Júnior, Afonso Lamelas, and Isabella Souza successfully completed the eight-week programme, which concluded with a keynote session delivered by Ole John Nielsen, recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

Developed by EDUA in partnership with the company Muda O Teu Jogo, the programme aimed to equip doctoral candidates, recent PhD graduates and junior researchers with leadership, management and emotional intelligence skills, helping them bridge the transition from academia to leadership positions in research, industry and entrepreneurship.

Running from 10 April to 19 June 2026, the programme combined weekly in-person sessions with online activities, bringing together participants from 19 doctoral programmes and nine countries. Through an experiential learning approach, the participants explored topics including self-leadership, communication and influence, team management, decision-making, innovation, entrepreneurship, and career development.

The final session featured Ole John Nielsen, who shared reflections on ethical leadership and highlighted the importance of peace, collaboration and social responsibility in addressing global challenges. His participation marked the conclusion of the first edition of the programme, reinforcing its ambition to develop researchers capable of leading multidisciplinary teams and creating societal impact.

Alongside advanced research training, initiatives such as the UA Global Leader programme strengthen the leadership and interpersonal skills increasingly required to address complex scientific and societal challenges.
