Research Summit 2026 showcases CICECO's research excellence and scientific talent

CICECO took part in Research Summit 2026 from the very beginning by organizing AIM Further @ Research Summit on Tuesday, 14 July, an event that preceded the official opening of the meeting at the University of Aveiro. Primarily aimed at PhD candidates and early-career researchers, the initiative brought together around one hundred participants from different departments and research units across the University of Aveiro. The programme provided a space for developing transferable skills, building collaborative networks, and sharing experiences among researchers at different stages of their careers.

Over the following three days, from 15 to 17 July, CICECO maintained a strong presence throughout the Research Summit 2026 scientific programme. The Research Unit organized two parallel sessions dedicated to its researchers: "Building Matter: From Atomic Design to Material Reality", held on Thursday, and "Advanced Materials: From Research to Innovation", organized on Friday in partnership with I3N-FSCOSD.

On Thursday evening, CICECO also hosted a joint flash talks session with Zhejiang University, featuring presentations by Cátia Monteiro, Paula M. Vilarinho, Luís D. Carlos, Paula Ferreira, Cláudia Nunes, and Manuel Melle-Franco.

On the day dedicated to the theme "Science, Policy and Impact: From Evidence to Action", Ana Barros represented CICECO in the University's plenary session with the presentation "A Comprehensive Contribution Towards Plastics Recycling."

Among the highlights of the meeting, Maria Mendes received the Best Communication Award – CICECO for her presentation "Alternative Sample Pretreatment and Microfluidic Strategies for Enhanced Biomarker Analysis."

The award recognizes the excellence of her scientific communication and the quality of research combining innovative sample pretreatment strategies with microfluidic systems to improve biomarker detection, contributing to the development of faster and more efficient diagnostic tools.

CICECO's participation in Research Summit 2026 reinforced the Research Unit's contribution to interdisciplinary research with scientific and societal impact, highlighting both the excellence of its researchers and the importance of effective scientific communication in maximizing the value of research.

The abstracts presented during Research Summit 2026 have been compiled in the Book of Abstracts, published by the University of Aveiro. The publication features dozens of contributions from CICECO researchers covering topics such as sustainable materials, biomaterials, polymer recycling, ionic liquids, photonics, functional coatings, bioplastics, luminescent materials, energy storage, and biomedical diagnostics, reflecting the breadth and diversity of the Research Unit's scientific activities.
