International Workshop Supported Researchers in Beamtime Proposal Writing

Mariela Nolasco, Andrei Salak, and Paulo Ribeiro-Claro from CICECO and Chemistry Department from University of Aveiro (along with Maria Paula Marques from the University of Coimbra), in collaboration with NeMPo, organized the International Hands-on Workshop on Beamtime Proposal Writing.

The event aimed to support researchers in developing successful applications for beamtime access at large-scale European research facilities.

The workshop had two key objectives: encouraging researchers to submit proposals and increasing the success rate of beamtime applications, particularly among new users. The initiative was supported by the EU project NEPHEWS, which promoted education and training to strengthen scientific research across Europe.

The workshop followed a three-step approach. First, participants registered online and declared their interest. Then, a hybrid information session on March 5, 2025, introduced available instruments, potential experiments, and guidance on completing the beamtime application form. Finally, an in-person session on March 14, 2025, provided hands-on discussions with experienced tutors to refine draft proposals.

Key speakers included Philip King, Associate Director for Partnerships and Programmes at ISIS Neutron and Muon Source; Stewart Parker, Head of the Molecular Spectroscopy Group at ISIS; and Pascal Manuel, Instrument Scientist at the WISH diffractometer, ISIS.
