Patent and Publish: Empowering Researchers to Protect and Share Innovation

The University of Aveiro hosted the information session “Patent and Publish: Practical Tips”, organised by UACOOPERA in collaboration with CICECO. The event provided the academic community with practical guidance on protecting research results while maintaining the ability to publish.

The opening session featured Marta Marques, from UACOOPERA, who introduced this support structure available at the University of Aveiro to assist researchers in patenting their work and stressed the importance to protect and transfer R&D results.

Following this, Paula Vliarinho, vice-director of CICECO, addressed the participants, inspiring them to safeguard their intellectual property, embrace resilience in the challenging path of patents, and emphasising the value of the collaboration with patent attorneys in this knowledge-sharing initiative.

The main session featured Anabela Carvalho and Sílvia Vieira, official Industrial Property Agents from Patentree, who shared strategies and real-world examples of how researchers can balance publication and intellectual property protection. Participants also had the opportunity to schedule short individual consultations with the Patentree team to discuss specific questions related to their projects.

The event highlighted the resources and support available at UACOOPERA for promoting knowledge transfer and safeguarding research outcomes, reinforcing the strategic importance of patents as the most robust tool in protecting and transferring industrial property.

It also reflects CICECO’s commitment to make available the tools necessary to maximise the impact and protection of their scientific work.

“Protecting the knowledge generated at the University of Aveiro is essential to transform research into real impact. At CICECO, we strive to create the right conditions for our researchers’ innovative ideas to go further and benefit society”, concluded Mara G. Freire, Vice-Director of CICECO.
