CICECO member joins renewed national leadership of U.S. strategic partnerships

The Government has announced the new national directors for the three major international collaboration programmes with North American institutions — MIT Portugal, UT Austin Portugal and Carnegie Mellon Portugal — renewed until 2030 to reinforce the international positioning of the national scientific and higher education system. CICECO has a direct connection to this new phase: Rute Ferreira (University of Aveiro), researcher at CICECO, has been appointed national director of the UT Austin Portugal Program, together with Rui Oliveira (University of Minho).

In Phase 4 of the UT Austin Portugal Program, the priority scientific domains are Clean Energy (developing sustainable energy systems and advancing hydrogen technologies), Advanced Computing (scaling tools for greener computing and AI), Nanotechnologies (advancing critical materials discovery), and Space–Earth Technologies (harnessing space technologies for Earth applications), offering unique opportunities to deepen international research cooperation and to convert scientific advances into high-impact innovation for both countries, shares prof. Rute.

For the MIT Portugal Program, the national direction will be assumed by João Pedro Barreto (University of Coimbra) and Alexandre Ferreira da Silva (University of Minho). The CMU Portugal Program will be coordinated by Inês Lynce (Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon) and João Magalhães (NOVA School of Science and Technology).

The mission structure remains under the coordination of José Manuel Mendonça (INESC TEC, University of Porto).

These partnerships constitute a strategic instrument for strengthening international scientific cooperation, enabling advanced training, mobility of students and researchers, and collaborative projects with high global impact. They facilitate the development of research initiatives capable of addressing complex scientific and technological challenges, while expanding Portugal’s engagement with global knowledge networks.
