Andreia Sousa receives EurJOC Award for Best Early-Career Research Article

Andreia F. Sousa, member of CICECO and of the Chemistry Department of the University of Aveiro, has been distinguished with the EurJOC SPQ Award 2026 for the Best Research Article by an Early Career Researcher. The distinction is granted by the Organic Chemistry Division of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Química (SPQ) under the EurJOC Society Award initiative, which recognises high-quality articles authored by early-career researchers.

The award is based on the article “A Greener Approach to 2,5-Furandicarboxylate Macrocycles and their Entropically Driven Ring Opening Polymerization”, published in Chemistry Europe. The work presents a sustainable strategy for the synthesis of bio-based macrocycles and their polymerisation, contributing to the development of more environmentally friendly polymericmaterials.

"I believe this does not change my research direction; on the contrary, it strongly confirms it! Ring-Opening Polymerisation has been significantly overlooked in the synthesis of furan-based polymers, particularly in the quest for greener pathways. Likewise, cyclodepolymerisation remains underexplored as an elegant and efficient strategy for polyester recycling. Moreover, this award also indirectly recognises the importance of collaborative work for which the FUR4Sustain COST Action was instrumental", explains Dr. Sousa.

The study resulted from international collaboration, being co-authored by Chaimaa Sadraoui, Fabio Aricò, and Giacomo Trapasso from Università Ca'? Foscari Venezia, and our team Feriel Abid and Paula Lacerda from Universidade de Aveiro. This recognition highlights the scientific relevance of the work and the importance of collaborative research in advancing sustainable chemistry.

The EurJOC SPQ Award aims to promote excellence and visibility for emerging researchers within the European Organic Chemistry community.
