The International Day of Ceramics was celebrated on 12 March at the University of Aveiro with a community event hosted at the Department of Materials and Ceramic Engineering (DEMaC). The initiative brought together students, researchers, and professionals to discuss the scientific, technological, and industrial relevance of ceramic materials.
Organised with the support of CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials and several academic and professional partners, the event included an exhibition of ceramic pieces developed within projects related to the theme, highlighting different approaches to ceramic materials, design, and applications.
The programme also featured a round-table discussion with invited speakers Inês Rondão from CTCV – Centro de Tecnologia e Inovação, João Carvalheiras from Grestel – Produtos Cerâmicos, S.A., and Maria Martins from Sanindusa, together with Diogo Lopes, Simão Santos and Henrique Vieira from the University of Aveiro. Around 50 participants attended the session.
The discussion centred on the professional experiences of the invited participants and their perspectives on the ceramic sector, while also responding to questions raised by the audience. The exchange provided an opportunity to explore different career paths and discuss current challenges and opportunities in ceramic science and industry.
The event concluded with an informal networking moment and a small lottery of three ceramic jars among participants. The organisers acknowledged the contribution of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Cerâmica e Vidro for supporting the coffee break and thanked all attendees for contributing to an active discussion.
The initiative was organised with the support of partners including the European Ceramic Society, Sociedade Portuguesa de Materiais, The American Ceramic Society, the Associação Académica da Universidade de Aveiro, the Materials Students’ Group of the University of Aveiro (NEM-AAUAv), and the Department of Materials and Ceramic Engineering, University of Aveiro.
The organisers expressed the intention of continuing the initiative in future editions, reinforcing the role of community engagement and dialogue between academia and industry in the development of ceramic materials.
