PATh Celebrates International Recognition and Scientific Excellence in Cartagena

PhD student Mariana Aguiar was distinguished with the Oral Communication Award at the 2nd International Symposium on Green and Sustainable Chemistry (ISGREEN2026), held in Cartagena, Spain, alongside the 8th International Conference on Biocatalysis in Non Conventional Media (BNCM2026). The recognition highlights the scientific quality, originality, and potential impact of her research, presented among contributions from an international community of researchers working at the forefront of sustainable chemistry and biotechnology.

The event brought together scientists from around the world to discuss emerging developments in green chemistry, biocatalysis, and sustainable technologies, fostering scientific exchange and interdisciplinary collaboration.

PATh was represented through three oral communications, including a plenary lecture delivered by Prof. João Coutinho entitled “Valorization of Whatever Comes Out of the Eggs”, which addressed innovative approaches to resource valorization and circular economy strategies.

Mariana Aguiar presented her PhD research entitled “Enhancing laccase driven poly(vinyl alcohol) depolymerisation using polyol based biosolvents”. The work explores sustainable approaches for polymer depolymerisation through enzymatic processes, contributing to the development of greener solutions for material processing and valorization.

The awarded research was conducted under the supervision of Andreia F. de Sousa, Frederik R. Wurm, and Ana M. Ferreira Takahashi, reflecting a collaborative effort that combines expertise in biocatalysis, sustainable materials, and green chemistry.

This distinction further reinforces the international recognition of the high quality research being developed within PATh and highlights the group's active contribution to advancing sustainable and bio-based technologies.
