CICECO members present at nanomaterial challenge to tackle real-world problems

Students in the first year of the Master's Program in Materials Engineering at the University of Aveiro (DEMaC) recently took part in a case-study challenge as part of their Nanomaterials and Nanotechnologies class, led by Paula Vilarinho, vice director of CICECO.

Working in teams, students were asked to analyze practical scenarios involving the real-world application of nanomaterials and nanotechnology, and to propose innovative solutions grounded in scientific reasoning. Each team then presented its findings to a panel made up of faculty members, researchers, and PhD students, many of them affiliated with CICECO, who offered feedback and posed questions on the proposed approaches.

Beyond the technical content, the exercise was designed to strengthen a broader set of skills: critical thinking, scientific communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, all of which are increasingly valued in both research and industry settings.

The challenge benefited from the contribution of a dedicated group of evaluators, including Cláudia Lopes, Alexandre Bastos, Ricardo Manuel Silva, Indrani Coondoo, Daniela V. R. Lopes, Oleksandr Tkach, Pedro Santos, Artur Baeta, Simão Santos, João Lopes Miranda, Ricardo Mineiro, Noelle Cardoso Zanini, and Francisco Leite, all researchers connected to CICECO.

Their involvement not only enriched the assessment process but also fostered a dynamic exchange of ideas across different academic levels, connecting senior researchers, PhD candidates, and first-year master's students within the institute's research community.

By linking academic learning to practical, hands-on problem-solving, this CICECO-supported initiative helps prepare the next generation of materials engineers to navigate the challenges of an increasingly complex and fast-moving technological landscape, reinforcing the institute's commitment to bridging cutting-edge research and education.
