Singapore mission opens new opportunities for research collaboration

Paula Vilarinho, CICECO researcher and vice director, represented the Department of Materials from University of Aveiro and CICECO at the 2nd Singapore–Portugal Research and Innovation Week, held from 22 to 26 June in Singapore.

The international mission brought together universities, research institutes, technology centres, industry representatives and government organisations from both countries to foster long-term collaboration in advanced manufacturing, additive manufacturing, technology transfer and innovation.

As part of the Portuguese delegation, Paula Vilarinho participated in a programme of institutional meetings, technical visits and networking sessions with leading Singaporean organisations, including the Singapore Centre for 3D Printing (SC3DP), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (NAMIC), SGInnovate and A*STAR. The mission focused on identifying opportunities for collaborative research, researcher mobility, industrial partnerships and technology commercialisation.

The programme also included visits to innovation hubs and industrial facilities, including the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS) and Mencast Holdings' Centre of Intelligent Manufacturing, where delegates explored how advanced manufacturing, additive manufacturing and digital technologies are being translated into industrial applications.

Discussions throughout the week centred on innovation ecosystems, entrepreneurship, technology transfer and strengthening connections between academia and industry.

In addition to the scientific and industrial programme, the Portuguese delegation was welcomed at the residence of the Portuguese Ambassador to Singapore, providing an opportunity to strengthen diplomatic and institutional ties supporting future cooperation between Portuguese and Singaporean organisations.

According to the strategic assessment of the mission, the initiative seeks to establish long-term research partnerships between Portugal and Singapore, promote researcher and student mobility, strengthen technology commercialisation and position Portuguese institutions as strategic partners in advanced manufacturing and deep-tech innovation. The programme also highlighted new opportunities for collaboration with NTU, including future research agreements and mobility schemes for doctoral students.

The participation reinforces CICECO's commitment to expanding its international network and building strategic collaborations that connect scientific excellence with innovation, industrial development and global partnerships.
