Researchers from CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials were distinguished with Best Poster Awards at the 49th International Congress of Theoretical Chemists of Latin Expression (QUITEL 2026), held in Coimbra, Portugal. The recognitions correspond to the two our of three Best Poster Awards given during the event, highlighting the excellence of research developed at CICECO in computational chemistry and sustainable catalysis.
Among the awardees was Daniela Alves Abreu, a doctoral researcher at CICECO supported by the MINIONS project, who received one of the Best Poster Awards for her work entitled "Nitrogen-to-ammonia conversion on sulphur-terminated molybdenum carbide MXenes." Her research explores the catalytic potential of sulphur-terminated molybdenum carbide MXenes for ammonia synthesis through first-principles calculations, contributing to the development of efficient materials for sustainable energy applications.
The second distinction was awarded to Nicolas Ferreira Martins, a visiting researcher from São Paulo State University (UNESP), Bauru, Brazil, currently undertaking a research stay at CICECO until December 2026. His poster, "Rational Design of Defective Sulfur-Terminated Ta?C MXene for Ammonia Production: A First-Principles Study," investigates how atomic-scale defects in tantalum carbide MXenes influence catalytic performance, providing new insights into the rational design of materials for ammonia production.
The awards were announced during the closing ceremony of QUITEL 2026, where the conference recognized the most outstanding poster presentations. The distinction also included Isaac Beltrán Orta (University of Guadalajara, Mexico), reflecting the high scientific standard of the international meeting.
Both studies were developed within the Computational Chemistry and Catalysis research activities at CICECO under the supervision of Professor José Richard Baptista Gomes, in collaboration with José Daniel Gouveia (University of Aveiro). Nicolas Ferreira Martins' work was additionally conducted in collaboration with Professor Julio Ricardo Sambrano from UNESP, Brazil, strengthening the international partnership between the two institutions.
These awards underscore CICECO's growing international reputation in computational catalysis, MXene-based materials, and clean energy research, while demonstrating the impact of advanced theoretical modelling in addressing global challenges related to sustainable ammonia production.
