From 30 June to 3 July, the University of Aveiro hosted the 4th European Symposium on Phytochemicals in Medicine and Food (4th EuSPMF), bringing together researchers and professionals from across Europe and beyond to discuss the latest advances in the investigation and application of phytochemicals in medicine, food, and biotechnology.
Organised with the local support of the University of Aveiro, the Department of Chemistry, and CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, the symposium provided an interdisciplinary forum to strengthen international collaborations, promote knowledge exchange, and explore innovative solutions addressing current societal challenges in health, nutrition, sustainability, and the bioeconomy.
Over four days, participants attended keynote lectures, invited talks, oral communications, and poster sessions covering a broad range of topics at the interface of natural products, analytical sciences, biotechnology, and data-driven approaches.
The scientific programme included sessions dedicated to:
- Natural Resources
- Natural Compounds and Human Health
- Novel Perspectives of Phytochemical Use in Contemporary Medicine
- From Farm to Fork
- Food and Agro Waste Recovery
- Phytochemicals in Functional Foods
- Food Safety and Quality
- Marine Natural Products
- Biotransformation
- Analytical Methods
- Novel Perspectives of Phytochemical Applications
- AI, Data Science & Bioinformatics
- Circular Economy & Green Technologies
The symposium reinforced the growing importance of phytochemical investigation in developing innovative approaches for disease prevention, sustainable food systems, resource valorisation, and circular economy strategies, while fostering dialogue between academia and industry.
