European seminar explores advances in photonics and neuromorphic computing

Researchers from the Kaunas University of Technology (Lithuania) visited the University of Aveiro on 9 July to present recent advances in nanomaterials and photonic technologies during a seminar organised within the framework of the European TETRANET project.

Hosted at the IT Amphitheatre on the Santiago Campus, the seminar brought together researchers, students and members of the academic community interested in emerging materials and their applications in photonics, sensing and next-generation computing technologies.

The session featured two invited presentations by Tomas Tamulevi?ius, Professor and Chief Researcher at Kaunas University of Technology, and Simas Ra?kauskas, Chief Researcher at the same institution.

In the opening lecture, "Self-assembly of Plasmonic Lattices and their Applications in Photonics", Tomas Tamulevi?ius presented recent developments in the engineering of plasmonic nanostructures through the self-assembly of noble-metal nanoparticles. The work demonstrated how well-defined plasmonic lattices can support high-quality optical resonances, creating new opportunities for applications in photonic devices, optical sensing and anticounterfeiting technologies.

The second presentation, "Synthesis and Applications of ZnO Nanotetrapods: From Sensors to Neuromorphic Computing", focused on zinc oxide (ZnO) nanotetrapods as a scalable platform for future neuromorphic hardware. Simas Ra?kauskas described a low-temperature spray-coating approach for fabricating three-dimensional ZnO nanotetrapod networks without lithography or vacuum processing. The resulting devices exhibited reproducible electrical and optoelectronic synaptic behaviour, highlighting their potential for applications ranging from sensors to artificial intelligence-inspired computing systems.

The seminar provided an opportunity to strengthen scientific exchange between the University of Aveiro and Kaunas University of Technology while showcasing innovative research at the intersection of nanomaterials, photonics and advanced electronic devices.

The event was organised within the framework of the TETRANET European project, which promotes collaboration in the development of advanced nanostructured materials and technologies across European research institutions.
