The CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials at the University of Aveiro is coordinating SAFE2PROTECT, a new Horizon Europe project that aims to develop innovative PFAS-free protective coatings for the construction sector. The initiative will combine bio-based binders with advanced functional additives to create high-performance coatings while reducing the environmental and human health risks associated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as "forever chemicals".
PFAS are widely used in industrial and consumer products because of their resistance to water, grease and heat. However, their persistence in the environment and potential impacts on ecosystems and human health have made their replacement a major scientific and regulatory priority.
Coordinated by João Tedim, researcher at CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, SAFE2PROTECT brings together researchers from CICECO and CESAM – Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies at the University of Aveiro. The project adopts the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework, integrating safety and sustainability considerations throughout the development of new materials.
The project seeks to demonstrate that bio-based alternatives can provide the durability and performance required by the construction industry without relying on PFAS. By developing safer functional coatings, SAFE2PROTECT will contribute to the transition towards more sustainable construction materials and support European ambitions for a circular and low-impact economy.
SAFE2PROTECT is funded under the Horizon Europe Cluster 4 – Digital, Industry and Space, which supports research and innovation aimed at strengthening Europe's industrial competitiveness while addressing global societal challenges. The project reinforces the University of Aveiro's commitment to developing advanced materials that contribute to environmental sustainability and industrial innovation.
