On September 17, the Fábrica Centro Ciência Viva in Aveiro hosted a decentralized Strategic Assessment workshop organized by the Agency for Research and Innovation (AI2). The event aimed to identify options for budget allocation and strategic research and innovation domains within the context of regional development priorities.
Strategic Assessment Workshop for Research and Innovation
The decentralized Strategic Assessment workshops currently underway—part of the process of establishing the Agency for Research and Innovation (AI2)—aim to gather input for defining national research and innovation priorities.
In Aveiro, the event brought together 55 participants representing the research and innovation ecosystem, ensuring a diversity of perspectives from academia, business, industry, education, science communication, and local and regional government. Through participatory activities, input was gathered to identify strategic options regarding financial resource allocation and priority research and innovation domains, all within the context of regional development priorities.
The participation of over 30 researchers from the University of Aveiro; representatives from companies such as Altice Labs, PRIO, InovaRia, RAIZ, PCI - Creative Science Park Aveiro Region, LOAD, BlueBio Alliance, Clever Food, and Watergrid; and representatives from various municipalities—including Aveiro, Anadia, Estarreja, and Fundão—sought to ensure that future public policies on research and innovation align with the real needs of scientific, economic, and social stakeholders. The opening session was attended by José Antão, from the Office of the Secretary of State for the Economy; Artur Silva, Rector of the University of Aveiro; Pedro Russo, President of Ciência Viva; and Maria do Rosário Partidário, coordinator of the AI2 Strategic Assessment. The latter, along with Mara Freire, Vice-Rector of the University of Aveiro, also attended the closing session. The event was hosted and regionally coordinated by Pedro Pombo, Director of the Fábrica Centro Ciência Viva de Aveiro.

This initiative, coordinated by the Center for Public Policy Planning and Assessment (PLANAPP) in collaboration with local entities, marks a crucial step in decentralizing the discussion on the future of research and innovation policy in Portugal.
