Lightweight aggregates exclusively produced from mixes of sludges generated from cutting and polishing of granite rocks and from filtration of potable water

Abstract

The present invention relates to the use of sludge generated in the granite rocks cutting process and in the filtration and treatment of water for human consumption process in lightweight aggregate formulations. The stable formation of the granite rocks composition and the correct control of the operation of the water treatment system ensures reasonable constancy of properties. These sludges can be used as they are processed or previously dried. Formulations containing sludge ratios from cutting granite and water treatment have been developed between 4:1 and 9:1 (by weight) after fast firing between 1130 and 1190 ºC in current manufacturing conditions are obtained: (i) products with similar functional properties to those of lightweight aggregate obtained from natural raw materials; or (ii) aggregates more mechanically resistant and more dense. This solution also presents environmental added value, translated in the recycling of waste as raw material.

Innovative aspects & main advantages

The present invention relates to the combined use of sludges generated from sawing and polishing of granite rocks (GS) and by the process of potable water filtration (WS) to produce lightweight aggregates. The wastes might be used in the as generated condition of after proper drying. Formulations have been developed containing GS:WS ratios changing from 4:1 and 9:1 (dried weight). After fast firing at temperatures between 1130 and 1190 °C we obtained: (i) products with similar functional properties to the lightweight aggregates obtained from natural raw materials (e.g. clay); or (ii) aggregates mechanically stronger but slightly more dense. This solution also presents environmental advantages, translated in the recycling of two distinct wastes.

Applications

The main application of this invention (the potential commercial/industrial sectors) is focused on the producers of sludges (as an alternative to landfill) and to lightweight producers. End users of the novel product are mortar and concrete producers.
