Sustainable 4D hydrogels functionalised with plant-based nanoparticles for bone regeneration in cancer patients

Biocompatible 4D materials for bone regeneration in MRONJ patients Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a rare but severe side effect of bone-targeting agents (BTAs) such as bisphosphonates, prescribed to breast cancer survivors to lower the risk of secondary bone cancer. MRONJ can cause progressive jawbone destruction, leading to infections, difficulty eating, and malnutrition. The EU-funded GreenNanoBone project will develop sustainable, biocompatible, and antimicrobial 4D materials that promote bone and tissue regeneration for the prevention and treatment of MRONJ. This injectable or printable material will be designed for non-invasive surgical use, with AI to optimise plant-derived substances and ensure compliance with medical standards. The project will uncover the mechanisms behind MRONJ, improve the quality of life, and offer new treatment options for complex fractures.
