Two luminescent Zn(II) coordination polymers as dual-response probes for the sensitive detection of sulfamethazine and Fe3+in aqueous solutions

abstract

The detection of antibiotics and cations in water is critical for human health and environmental protection. Two new ternary Zn(II) coordination polymers [Zn2(L1)2(NPTA)2]n (1) and [Zn2.5(L2)(NPTA)2(OH)]n (2) based on bis (benzimidazol) ligands (L1 = 1,5-bis(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)-pentane, L2 = 1,4-bis(2-ethyl-benzimidazol-1-yl)-2butene, H2NPTA = 3-nitrophthalic acid) were hydrothermally synthesized with the mixed-ligand approach. Both 1 and 2 are 1D infinite chains. 1 and 2 further extend into 2D supramolecular frameworks through N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonding and n-n interactions, respectively. 1 and 2 can be used as bifunctional fluorescent sensors for Fe3+ and sulfamethazine (SMZ) with high sensitivity and selectivity. The detection limits for Fe3+ of 1 and 2 were 5.7 x 10-5 and 2.7 x 10-5 mol center dot L- 1, respectively, and for SMZ 4.98 x 10-5 and 4.84 x 10-6 mol center dot L- 1, respectively. They also have notable thermal and chemical stability. The fluorescence sensing mechanism is also discussed in detail.
