Glass-ceramic sealants for SOFC-based systems

The studies of electrochemical, physicochemical and mechanical properties of glass-ceramic sealants, based on SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-BaO and SiO2-MgO-BaO systems, showed sufficient stability in contact with zirconia, lanthanum gallate and ceria solid electrolytes at temperatures below 1100-1150 K. Thermal expansion of glass-ceramics can be optimized, to a considerable extent, by adding submicron powders of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). Excessive YSZ additions result, however, in increasing ionic contribution to the total conductivity, which is predominantly electronic. For moderately doped sealants, the conductivity is essentially composition-independent and varies in the range (2-7)x 10(-7) S/cm at 1123 K.
