Photoluminescent MOF Sensors: On the Road to Cancer Diagnostics

resumo

In the past 10 years, Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as efficient tools to develop sensors. The highly tunable architecture and porous nature, allied with an exquisitely high surface area, have opened an avenue for the use of MOFs as functional materials capable of recognizing various biomolecules. Most of these functional materials were achieved through combination and conjugation with biomolecules, luminophores and post-synthetic modification and fine-tuning, as well as enhancing their diagnostic sensitivity. Unfortunately, the existing detection methods for cancer biomarkers are still laborious, requiring specialized equipment often with low selectivity and sensitivity. In this regard, the use of photoluminescent MOFs enables the development of simple sensors capable of detecting cancer biomarkers with high sensitivity and selectivity. Here, we review the various strategies reported in the literature for the fabrication and modification of photoluminescent MOFs and their role in sensing cancer biomarkers.
