Comparison Between ASTM G150 (Standard Test Method For Electrochemical Critical Pitting Temperature Testing of Stainless Steels) and ASTM G48 (Standard Test Methods for Pitting and Crevice Corrosion Resistance of Stainless Steels and Related Alloys by Use of Ferric Chloride Solution).

resumo

The critical pitting temperatures of three stainless steel grades EN1.4539, EN1.4462 and EN1.4401 have been determined ten times for each steel grade using two test methods, the ferric chloride test method (ASTM G48) and the electrochemical test method (ASTM G150) respectively. In addition potentiostatic tests were carried out in order to determine the right potential to use in the electrochemical method especially for EN1.4401. The CPT data thus obtained has been statistically analyzed for each stainless steel grade with the two test method. The statistical parameters that were determined are, the measures of central tendency (mean median, mode) and measures of deviation (standard deviation and confidence interval). Furthermore, the two test methods are compared with respect to their fundamental mechanisms, economics and environmental impacts.
