Pedro J. Carvalho is an assistant professor at the Chemistry Department of University of Aveiro, Portugal and researcher at the CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, one of the leading European Laboratories in Materials Science. He graduated in Chemical Engineering at University of Aveiro, ending up developing a special interest on thermodynamic characterization of compounds, process optimization and sub-products valorisation; interests that endure since his PhD in Chemical Engineering, in 2011, to date. Pedro’s interests were further nurtured by establishing important collaborations and research lines that he incorporated on the research group he makes part of – PATh. The Research Team, PATH, operates in the fields of biorefinery, green chemistry, eco-solvents development, and sustainable process design. The team comprises now 7 senior researchers, 5 junior researcher, 1 Post-Doctoral Fellow, 29 PhD students and 8 MSc students, plus a variable number of project grant holders and foreign visitors. The PATH group publishes about 50 articles/year that attract close to 3000 citations.

Pedro coordinates and participates in several national and European research projects and has ongoing collaborations with Saudi Arabia, India, Brazil, UK, Spain and Germany. Pedro research has been focused on the petrochemical and biorefinery, in particular on the study of novel solvents for gas capture – separation and sequestration, from natural gas, post-combustion and syngas streams – the extraction and purification of impurities from petrochemical streams, the extraction of valuable compounds from biomass and wastes. For these applications he has been interested in developing/optimizing innovative technologies, like membrane technology, in conjunction with neoteric solvents, like ionic liquids (IL), deep eutectic solvents (DES) and other novel greener solvents. In all cases he strives at developing a fundamental understanding of their physico-chemical characterization and the mechanisms of action, aiming at designing novel solvents and processes that are more biocompatible, and biodegradable, less toxic, and produced, if possible, from renewable sources.
