Study proposes carbon structures to pave the way for the materials of the future
Authored by Jorge Laranjeira, Leonel Marques, Manuel Melle-Franco, Karol Strutynski, and Manuel Barroso, from the Physics and Chemistry departments of CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials and i3N/Aveiro – Institute of Nanostructures, Nanomodelling and Nanofabrication, the work shows that the new structures are mechanically and dynamically stable, fundamental requirements for their eventual experimental production.

World’s Best Scientists 2026 Highlights 27 Researchers from CICECO
Twenty-seven researchers from CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials have been included in the 2026 edition of the World’s Best Scientists ranking, published by Research.com, a bibliometric platform that evaluates scientific performance worldwide.
UA is 82nd worldwide in citations per faculty; CICECO published 563 papers
A result to which CICECO has made a decisive contribution, with 563 SCI-indexed papers published in 2025 alone. The findings come from the QS World University Rankings 2027.
