Elena Mercedes Pérez-Monserrat

Assistant Researcher


I received a degree (B.S) in Geological Sciences (1999) and a Ph.D. in Geology (2015) from the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain) and a M.Sc. in Conservation and Restoration of the Built Heritage (2005) from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (Spain). I was a research scholar at the Geological Survey of Spain (2000-2002) and laboratory technician, research fellow and project manager at the Geosciences Institute of Madrid, IGEO (2003-2018). I have been assistant professor of laboratory practices at the Spanish Distance University (2004-2006) and at the Complutense University of Madrid (2004-2007). I have been working at the Department of Geosciences of the University of Padua (Italy), first awarded with a Marie-Skłodowska Curie Individual Fellowship (MSCA-IF, 2019-2021) and then with a post-doctoral contract supported by Casa di Risparmio Padova e Rovigo (CARIPARO, 2022-2023). Since August 2023, I am working at the CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials framed under the Call for the Stimulus of Scientific Employment Individual Support (CEEC IND - 5th Edition).




  • interdisciplinary and multi-analytical studies of stones and ceramic materials used in the cultural heritage (characterization, provenance/manufacturing and decay)
  • production technologies -provenance and composition of the raw clays, procedures/treatments and firing dynamics- of ancient ceramics (archaeological artefacts, fired bricks and tiles)
  • technological value of ancient bricks: traditional building materials able to address the current ceramic industry challenges regarding to eco-innovative and sustainable solutions (raw materials supply, environment protection or cost-efficient processes).
