Chapter 7 - Application of Oxidative Enzymes in the Treatment of Industrial Effluents

resumo

Bioprocess engineering is a conglomerate of biotechnology and biological engineering with chemical engineering in its background. It mainly deals with the design and construction of unit processes that involve biological organisms or molecules. Today, the applications of bioprocess/biochemical engineering are quite visible in the production of biopharmaceuticals, fermentation products such as amino acids, organic acids, ethanol, antibiotics, and polymers and papers from biological materials. This final volume of multi-volume series on Recent Developments in Biotechnology has been written for students, academicians and researchers coming from varied disciplines of Chemistry, Biology and Engineering plus industry personnel as well. The volume is quite readable and thorough in its presentation of the subject so as to provide the readers a broad coverage and insight into the area. To meet the above objectives this volume covers following topics: • Biogas as an economical and eco-friendly renewable energy source • Production of synthesis gas from biomass • Pretreatment of biomass for biochemical conversion • Role of amphiphiles in economical production of ethanol from biomass • Industrial scale production of biodiesel by cost-effective enzymatic catalysis • Biobutanol as a green fuel of the future • Production of ethanol from pressed coffee pulp • Solid-state fermentation of waste by white-rot fungi • Interaction between physical properties of cultivation substrate and microorganism growth in solid–state fermentation • Overview of microreactors in biotransformations • Bioreactors in tissue engineering • External loop airlift bioreactors for biotechnology processes • Human mesenchymal stromal cells (hMSC) for cell based therapies • Reactive extraction for the recovery of carboxylic acids • Extraction of organic acids by liquid membranes • Downstream processing for efficient and economical recovery of lipase • Metabolic level modelling for microorganisms’ cultivation and metabolites production in a chemostat • Mathematical modeling of clavulanic acid adsorption in calcined hydrotalcites • Biopharming and bioprocessing of plantibodies • Biotechnological conversion of glycerol into bio-polymer 1,3-propanediol • Application of NIR and Raman spectroscopy in the area of biotechnology • Application of biotechnology in pulp and paper industry • Production of carboxymethylcellulase by Bacillus subtilis subsp. Subtilis A-53 and Escherichia coli JMB109/A-53 • Production of cellulase and xylanase enzyme from agro-wastes The present volume is comprised of 24 chapters contributed by 63 academicians and active researchers from 12 countries, namely Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Croatia, India, Iran, Korea, Poland, Portugal, Turkey, and United States of America presenting an overview of the research being carried out in different parts of the world in the field of Bioprocess Engineering.
