This infrastructure provides a set of techniques to characterize the mechanical properties of materials. It allows the determination of mechanical properties, fatigue testing, friction force measurements and hardness determination. The usage of the equipment includes internal and external access, through training or assisted usage.
About Mechanical properties
Mechanical tests
Determination of flexural, compression and tensile strenght with loads of 1, 20 and 250 kN.
Determination of flexural, compression and tensile strength with loads of 200 N, 5 and 10 kN.
Fatigue tests
Mechanical fatigue testing of different classes of materials (polymers, ceramics, metals and composites) under bending or compression/tension loads, in air or liquid media.
Tribometer tests
Study and application of friction, wear and lubrication study the evaluation of the friction force under linear reciprocation, rotating and angular sliding under loads from 1N – 60N for dry and wet conditions.
Universal hardness tests
Determination of hardness of materials. Possibility to test according Vickers (ISO 6507; 5, 10, 30 and 100 kgf), Rockwell (ISO 659; 10, 60 100 and 150 kgf) and Brinnel (ISO 6506; 1.0 mm indenter ball: 5, 10 and 30 kgf; 2.5 mm indenter ball: 62.5 and 187.5 kgf) methodologies.
Vickers micro hardness test
Determination of micro hardness of materials (10 gf to 2 kgf).

Filipe Oliveira
Scientific Coordinator
Principal Investigator of the University of Aveiro (Dep. of Materials and Ceramic Engineering). His research has been focused on advanced ceramic-metal composites for structural applications as well as CVD micro and nanocrystalline diamond coatings for tribological and bio-tribological applications and more recently for microelectrodes used in corrosion studies. He is also involved in the production of carbon nanotubes using CVD techniques and on the application of laser floating zone for high-temperature materials.
