Short CV

I had obtained my Masters degree in Physics from Guru Nanak Dev University, India in 2004 and went on to serve as a research fellow - cum - teaching assistant in materials science at Thapar University, India during September 2004 – July 2005. I joined the research group of Professor José M.F. Ferreira at University of Aveiro, Portugal as a research student in October 2005. Since then, during ~5 years, the prime focus of my research work has been towards investigating the structural and thermal behavior of different alkaline-earth aluminosilicate glass and glass-ceramic systems, with emphasis on clinopyroxene based systems, in order to qualify them for different technological applications. I was awarded the Ph.D. ‘European doctorate’ on 21. 12. 2009, under the supervision of Professor José M.F. Ferreira, for my Ph.D. dissertation entitled, “Clinopyroxene based glasses and glass-ceramics for functional applications” by University of Aveiro (UA), Portugal.

My research in past four years was dedicated towards synthesis and in-depth characterization of clinopyroxene based glasses and glass-ceramics with their glass compositions designed along: (i) enstatite (MgSiO3) – rich corner of enstatite-diopside (CaMgSi2O6) join, (ii) diopside based, and (iii) diopside-rich corner of diopside-Ca-tschermak (CaAl2SiO6) join. The objective of study was dual, both scientific and technological; particularly to gain fundamental knowledge on the formation of crystalline phases and solid solutions in selected glass-ceramic systems, and to evaluate the feasibility for application of new materials in different technological areas with emphasis on sealing in high temperature electrochemical applications, for example: solid oxide fuel/electrolyzer cells (SOFC/SOEC) and high temperature sensors.

 

I was awarded the Ph.D. fellowship by Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), Portugal in 2007. Also, I was awarded the ‘Guest research scholarship’ by Swedish Institute, Sweden for a period of 6 months during October 2007 – March 2008 to work in the area of neutron diffraction studies on glass-ceramics in the research group of Professor Sten Eriksson at Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden. Apart from that, I was also invited as Guest researcher for a period of 3 months (15th March 2009 – 15th June 2009) at University of Modena and Rggio-Emilia, Modena, Italy to work in the research group of Professor Luisa Barbieri and Professor Anna Maria Ferrari in the area of Rietveld refinement on glass-ceramics.

 

Since January 2010, I am working as a postdoctoral researcher (grant funded by FCT) in the research group of Professor José M.F. Ferreira at UA. The focus of research during my postdoctoral tenure at UA is towards the development of  self-healing glass/glass-ceramic seals for solid oxide fuel cells. Apart fro thatl,  my research interest also lies in the area of  glasses/glass-ceramics for biomedical applications as well as for nuclear waste encapsulation.
