Combination of layered-based materials as an innovative strategy for improving active corrosion protection of carbon steel

resumo

Layered hydroxide salt and layered double hydroxide intercalated respectively with molybdate (LHS-M) and gluconate (LDH-G) were used together for corrosion protection of carbon steel for the first time. Essays revealed that inhibitor release from LHS-M and LDH-G occurred in presence of chloride anions, within different time -scales. Electrochemical studies performed for inhibitors, directly in solution and intercalated into the nano -containers, showed that the protection of carbon steel can be tuned using the right ratio of inhibitors and nanocontainers. Coatings loaded with a mixture of the nanocontainers were applied on carbon steel plates and found to improve the anticorrosion performance, attributed to the inhibitors' action and chloride anions trapping.
