Study of old and rehabilitation mortars by common analytical techniques

resumo

The need of compatibility between old and rehabilitation materials must be taken in account in any correct buildings rehabilitation process. A proper characterization of old materials becomes an essential step and must be comparatively performed at various levels. This is usually a difficult procedure due to several parameters involved, like binder and aggregates nature and ratios, the eventual presence of additives, admixtures and so on. The process of searching compatible rehabilitation mortars can become faster and easier if a well-known characterization methodology is followed. This work remarks the important aspects to take in consideration in common techniques that give important information on mortars nature (XRD, DTA/TGA, mechanical strength, density and porosity determinations) in selected mortars formulations. Thermal analyses seem to be the most useful amongst all techniques used. The same methodology was then used to characterize old mortars and, for each case, an attempt was made to point the more adequate rehabilitation mortars. The most adequate binder and aggregates, and their proportions were inferred.
