Effect of Cu on the sintering ability of a surface modified Ti5Si3-based alloy synthesized by mechanical alloying

resumo

A (Ti,Mg)(5)Si-3 alloy was synthesized by mechanical alloying from TiH1.924, Mg and Si powders. After milling, the surface of a portion of the powder was chemically modified by the deposition of a Cu thin layer by d.c. magnetron sputtering. Coated and uncoated samples were consolidated by cold isostatic pressing and sintered at different temperatures. The (Ti,Mg)(5)Si-3 phase formed through milling decomposed into Ti5Si3 + Mg2Si during sintering at 900 degrees C. After 1300 degrees C sintering, the coated and uncoated samples were formed mainly by a Ti5Si3 intermetallic phase. MgO fine precipitates were also detected in the microstructure of the samples sintered at 1300 degrees C. Cu acted as an activating sintering element for reaching densification.
