Toward the Recovery and Reuse of the ABS Phase-Forming Components

abstract

Ionic liquids (ILs) have attracted significant interest as solvents in the extraction and purification of diverse biomolecules. Despite the so many different applications of ILs as solvents or as phase forming components of aqueous biphasic systems (ABS), little is known about the economic impact and scale-up of these processes. In fact, for any process to be of industrial relevance while using ILs as solvents, it is crucial to study their effective recovery, removal, and recyclability. In this sense, this chapter intends to summarize the approaches and strategies of recycling and reuse of ILs as pure compounds, in aqueous solution, and as IL-rich phases.
