Emanuel V. Capela

Junior Researcher

Short CV

Emanuel V. Capela is currently a Junior Researcher at the research group "Process and Product Applied Thermodynamics" (PATh), CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials, University of Aveiro, Portugal.
His research interests are mainly focused in the production of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) by mammalian cell technology and in the design of integrated downstream bioprocesses, for the selective extraction and purification of mAbs directly from the complex medium, envisaging the process integration and intensification. Moreover, he has been working with a new class of solvents, ionic liquids, where his scientific interest devoted to these compounds includes the characterization of their properties and the evaluation of their potential in the establishment of extractive platforms for value-added compounds, in particular for biopharmaceuticals. Currently, his research activities are also focused on the InsectERA Agenda - a project with a consortium of 38 entities (companies and universities/institutes), that aims to foster the circular economy and leverage the development of new products, processes and services, based on R&D and innovation, with high added-value and incorporation of knowledge and technology, allowing to meet the challenge of the green transition towards environmental sustainability.
Born on 24 of June of 1993 at Porto, Portugal, obtained his BSc degree in Biochemistry from University of Aveiro, Portugal, in 2014, his MSc degree in Biochemistry - Biomolecular Methods from the same institution in 2016, and his PhD in Chemical Engineering/Bioengineering from the University of Aveiro, Portugal in collaboration with Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, Portugal, in 2022.
