An easy assessment of the composition of low-molecular-weight organic components of industrial Eucalyptus globulus kraft black liquor

resumo

An improved extraction procedure is proposed for estimating the low-molecular-weight organic compounds in kraft black liquors. Black liquor from E. globulus pulping was sequentially extracted with diethyl ether at pH 12, 7 and 2, followed by ethyl acetate at pH 2. Two samples of industrial black liquors collected two months apart and showing similar basic parameters were analyzed. The total extraction yields were in the range 31-33 g/L and the weight percentages of compounds detected on the GC-MS analysis in the range 32-41%. About 90 different compounds, arising essentially from lignin and carbohydrate degradation were identified. The GPC analysis of the remaining non-volatile fraction (noneluted in the GC column) showed that it is composed mainly of lignin dimers and trimers. The advantage of such a sequential extraction scheme are discussed.
