Glass-ceramics in the former Soviet Union: a review on industry-oriented developments

resumo

This brief review is focused on the major developments of glass-ceramic materials, performed in the former Soviet Union and oriented to large-scale industrial applications. Emphasis is given to three groups of glass-ceramics: (i) the materials produced from slags, ashes and other industrial wastes, (ii) "petrurgical" glass-ceramics produced from natural rocks, and (iii) technical glass-ceramics with advanced properties. In the latter group, materials with low thermal expansion, cordierite- and steatite-based glass-ceramics, cements, materials enabling easy mechanical processing and glass-ceramics for medical applications are considered. The compositions, processing conditions, physicochemical and thermo-mechanical properties, and application domains of the glass-ceramic materials are briefly discussed. Another important point being addressed is on the formation of crystalline phases in glasses, which is a key factor determining properties of the glass-ceramics.
