Ordering mechanism in high-pressure polymerization of C-60: Avoiding geometrical frustration by stress-driven bond selection

resumo

The mechanism of bond ordering in high-pressure C-60 polymerization was clarified by following the polymerization process through in situ synchrotron angular-dispersive diffraction. The bonding directions correspond to the maximum applied stress directions and are therefore selected by stress. The bond-selecting stress field prevents the isotropic propagation of the polymerization in three-dimensional space, which would give a disordered frustrated structure as in photopolymerization, and leads to an ordered arrangement of polymerized molecules that causes a symmetry reduction.
