Recent advances in the controlled heterogeneous modification of cellulose for the development of novel materials

resumo

This short review critically updates the state of the art related to the heterogeneous modification of cellulose fibers by three different approaches, viz. (i) their grafting using controlled radical polymerisation; (ii) their chemical modification for the development of biocomposites, including co-continuous self-reinforced composites and materials with biodegradable matrices; and (iii) the development of superhydrophobic surfaces. These recent contributions were selected to emphasize the variety of interesting novel materials which can be obtained from such an "old" natural macromolecule.
