Recent simulated moving bed strategies for enhanced separations

abstract

The simulated moving bed (SMB) technology is particularly targeted for difficult separations as in the case of mixtures of enantiomers. Recently, several improved strategies have been proposed in order to increase products purity, recovery, productivity, and reduce solvent consumption. Innovative operation modes like Intermit tent - SMB, Supercritical SMB, variable external streams systems, and other schemes for multicomponent separation may be cited. In this chapter, the modeling and fundamentals of such recent strategies are presented and discussed, being compared with conventi onal SMB modes of operation.
