Inauguration of the Portuguese Centre for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

On the 10th of May, the University of Aveiro (UA) marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of a new state-of-the-art facilitiy: The Portuguese Centre for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (RMN). The ceremony, graced by the presence of the Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, featured commendations for UA’s remarkable contribution to education, knowledge, civic, social, and economic transformation.

João Rocha, former CICECO's director and head of the newly inaugurated center reminisced about the university's journey, referencing David Mourão Ferreira's words to highlight the beginning of this "happy love story" back in 1977 with the acquisition of its first rudimentary RMN spectrometer. João Rocha emphasized the centre’s distinction as "the most comprehensive in the country outside the medical imaging field," housing unique equipment in the Iberian Peninsula, one among only fifty worldwide. This advanced technology, crucial in medical imaging for detailed body scans, also significantly supports research across various disciplines.

J. Rocha concluded his speech with a call for political and financial support, stressing the need for funding to update equipment and cover operational and maintenance costs. He underscored the centre’s potential to position itself as the national hub for nuclear resonance, open to collaboration with the scientific and industrial communities across Portugal.

This momentous occasion not only marks the expansion of the CICECO's infrastructure but also reinforces its position as a leading Associated Laboratory.
